Vert Space LED Bulb vs CFL vs Incandescent Bulb

Vert Space LED Bulb vs Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) vs Incandescent Bulb

How do LED Bulbs really compare to their cheaper alternatives? Is it worth to pay more for LED lights?

We wanted to find out so we used our best-selling Vert Space LED Bulb and compared it to the Incandescent (traditional) Bulb and the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL). Our comparison only focused on the performance, efficiency and lifetime of the 3 light types. It did not take into account other factors like heat production and mercury presence.

The LED Bulbs we decided to use are the 6 and 8W versions. For the Incandescent Bulbs we picked the 25, 40 and 60W types and for the CFL’s we decided to go with the 12, 15 and 23W.

First, for each bulb we measured the real wattage used and the lux (at 60cm) each bulb produced. The results are presented below.

LED Bulb vs CFL vs Traditional Comparision

The Vert Space LED bulb clearly outperformed the Traditional Bulb and the CFL. The 8W LED bulb produces 75.9 lux per watt, compared to the 12W CFL producing 23.3 lux per watt and the 60W Traditional Bulb producing only 3.5 lux per watt.

Now we wanted to find out if this high efficiency compared to the Traditional Bulb and CFL justifies the higher cost of the LED Bulb. There are different ways to approach this problem. We decided to keep things simple and to come up with a way that helps the consumer decide whether it is worth to them to switch to LED.

First, we determined how many Traditional Bulbs or CFLs one LED bulb is worth based on its performance and the savings it generates. To do so we used the highest lux/wattage output of the Traditional Bulb and the CFL and compared it to that of the LED Bulb.

Second, we calculated how many Traditional Bulbs or CFLs are needed during the lifetime of a LED Bulb.

LED Bulb vs CFL vs Traditional Bulb Cost Comparision

We determined that consumers using Traditional Bulbs can pay up to 60 times the cost of one Traditional Bulb for one LED Bulb and will still benefit from switching to LED.

Consumers that are currently using CFLs can pay up to 10 times the cost of one CFL for one LED bulb and will still benefit from switching to LED.

Is it worth switching to LED bulbs?  You decide.
